Web Design & Development Company in Mumbai: Separating Real Engineering from Creative Packaging

Mumbai agencies pitch beautifully, but many subcontract the actual engineering. Here is how to check who writes your code, what you own, and what it should cost.

Authored by Paban BhuyanWritten by the India Web Designs team — engineers and strategists who build and ship the Next.js systems, WhatsApp automations, and growth architecture covered on this blog.

Mumbai has a particular problem when it comes to hiring a web development company, and it is the opposite of what you would expect. There are too many good-looking options.

The city that produces India's advertising, its films, its television and a large share of its brand marketing has an unusually high baseline of presentation quality. Agencies in Lower Parel and Andheri West pitch beautifully. The deck is tight, the case studies are cinematic, the office has exposed brick and a coffee machine that costs more than a small project. And a meaningful number of those agencies are, at their core, brand and creative shops that subcontract the actual engineering to a two-person team you will never meet.

That is not fraud. Plenty of those projects turn out fine. But it creates a specific risk for a Mumbai business: you are paying Mumbai rates for creative packaging, and the technical work — the part that determines whether your site is fast, secure, maintainable and yours — is being done by whoever was cheapest and available. When something breaks in month nine, the agency that charmed you cannot fix it, because they never wrote it.

This article is about how to tell the difference. It covers what a Mumbai business should verify before signing, how we deliver remotely from Guwahati, honest cost and timeline ranges, and the situations where we would tell you to hire someone in Mumbai instead.

What businesses in Mumbai should look for in a web design & development company

Mumbai's industry mix creates requirements you will not find in the same concentration elsewhere in India. The city is the country's financial capital — the RBI, both major stock exchanges, most of the mutual fund and insurance industry, a dense NBFC and fintech sector. It is also the centre of media and entertainment, of advertising, of a very large pharmaceutical presence, of shipping and logistics around the ports, and of real estate marketing at a scale no other Indian city matches.

Each of those puts a distinctive load on a website. A BFSI-adjacent business has compliance and data-handling obligations. A media or entertainment property has to serve heavy assets to a large concurrent audience without collapsing. A real estate developer needs project microsites that go live in days, not months, and that survive a launch weekend traffic spike. A pharma company has regulated claims and document control. These are engineering problems, not design problems, and they are where the subcontracting model tends to fail.

Verify who is actually writing the code

This is the Mumbai-specific question and it is worth asking bluntly: is development done in-house, and can I speak to the person who will lead it?

There is nothing wrong with an agency that partners with a specialist development firm, as long as they say so and you can evaluate that firm too. What is corrosive is the undisclosed handoff, where the brand agency's account manager becomes a lossy relay between you and an engineering team you cannot reach. Every clarification takes three days. Every bug report gets translated twice. Nobody is accountable because accountability is split across a commercial relationship you are not party to.

Ask to have the technical lead on a call before you sign. If that request is deflected, you have learned what you needed to know.

Code ownership and where it lives

Get it in writing: on final payment, who owns the source code, and what repository does it sit in?

This has a sharper edge in Mumbai than elsewhere because of how project-driven the market is. A real estate developer might run eight project microsites through three different agencies over five years. A media house might rebuild its property twice in that time. If each build leaves the code with the vendor, you accumulate nothing — every new project starts from zero and every old project is hostage to a relationship you have already moved on from.

The specific things to secure: the repository, the hosting account in your company's name, the domain registration in your company's name, and any design source files. If an agency registered your domain under their own account "for convenience," fix that before you do anything else.

Performance, because Mumbai audiences are mobile and impatient

Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift — are measurable on any live URL through PageSpeed Insights for free. Run the agency's own site. Run three sites from their portfolio.

Mumbai gives this an operational dimension that other cities do not. A very large share of your audience is browsing on a phone during a commute — on a local train between Borivali and Churchgate, in a cab on the Sea Link, on the metro. Connectivity is intermittent and attention spans are short. Heavy hero videos and animation-dense page builders, which is exactly what a creative-led agency loves to build, are precisely the wrong thing for that context. A gorgeous site that takes nine seconds to become interactive on a 4G connection in a moving train has failed, however good it looks on the agency's iMac.

Ask what performance thresholds they will commit to and whether those numbers appear in the contract.

Pricing structure, and what "Mumbai rate" is buying

Mumbai has India's highest agency rates, and some of that premium is legitimate — genuinely senior creative talent, strategic depth, category experience. Some of it is Lower Parel rent being passed on to you.

The way to tell them apart is to ask for the quote broken down: strategy and discovery, design, development, content, project management. If development is a small fraction of a large number, you are buying creative, and you should decide consciously whether that is what you need. For a consumer brand launch it might genuinely be. For a logistics company that needs a working freight enquiry system, it is not.

Also watch for the retainer that never ends. Mumbai's agency culture leans heavily toward ongoing engagements, which is fine when there is ongoing work and expensive when there is not. Ask what the retainer covers monthly and what happens if you pause it.

Portfolio verification

Live URLs, not screenshots. Check that the sites are still up, still look like the case study, and still perform. In a market as project-heavy as Mumbai's, portfolios go stale fast — a lot of agency case studies point to sites that were rebuilt by someone else two years ago.

Ask which projects in the portfolio the agency built end to end versus designed and handed off. The answer is often illuminating.

India Web Designs vs. a typical Mumbai agency

"Typical Mumbai agency" here means the mid-market creative-led digital shop that most Mumbai SMEs and mid-size companies actually engage — not the large network agencies serving multinational accounts, which operate on entirely different terms.

FeatureIndia Web DesignsTypical Mumbai Agency
Pricing Transparency Fixed project price against a written scope, with exclusions listed. Development is a named line item, not folded into a bundled creative fee. Change orders priced and approved in writing. Often a bundled retainer or package where the split between creative, strategy and engineering is not visible. Mumbai overheads are priced in. Extras tend to surface after the creative is approved.
Code Ownership Full source code and repository transfer on final payment. Hosting and domain registered in your name from day one. No proprietary builder dependency. Inconsistent. Where development is subcontracted, ownership is often unclear because the agency itself may not hold clean rights to what its partner built.
Performance (Core Web Vitals) LCP, INP and CLS targets agreed upfront and verified on the live site before handover, tested against realistic mobile network conditions. Design-led builds frequently ship with heavy video, custom fonts and animation libraries that push mobile LCP well past acceptable thresholds. Usually only addressed if the client complains.
Delivery Model Remote nationwide from Guwahati. Scheduled video discovery, live staging demos each sprint, shared tracker. No Mumbai office and we say so plainly. Local presence, which enables in-person workshops and studio sessions — genuinely valuable for brand work. Day-to-day execution still runs on email and WhatsApp.
Post-Launch Support Defined warranty period covering defects in delivered work, then an optional retainer with stated response times. You are never obliged to keep paying to retain access to your own site. Typically bundled into an ongoing retainer. Support quality often tracks how commercially active the account currently is.
Recurring Commissions / Fees No commission on your transactions, no markup on third-party tools, no mandatory hosting resale. You hold every account. Media and tooling markups are common and not always disclosed. Some agencies retain hosting and domains, creating a recurring fee with a painful exit.

The delivery model row is the one where a Mumbai agency has a real advantage over us, and it would be dishonest to spin it. If your project genuinely needs brand strategy workshops in a room, film production, or a creative director who can sit with your marketing team for a day, Mumbai is the best city in India for that and we are not a substitute. What we would argue is that this describes a narrower band of projects than Mumbai's agency market implies.

Why remote delivery works for Mumbai businesses

Mumbai already runs on distributed work more than almost any Indian city, for a mundane reason: the commute. A meeting between Andheri and Nariman Point can cost four hours of a working day. Post-2020, Mumbai companies normalised video calls faster and more permanently than most, precisely because the alternative was so expensive in time.

So the question is not really whether remote collaboration works — your own teams are doing it across the Western and Central lines every day. The question is what replaces the reassurance of being able to walk into a vendor's office.

How the process runs

  • Discovery calls. One to three scheduled video sessions. We map what the site must do, who the audience is, what systems it connects to, and what the constraints are. For a Mumbai client this is where the important specifics surface — a fintech's data residency requirements, a media property's traffic spike pattern around a release, a developer's need to spin up a project microsite in ten days.
  • A written scope with a fixed price. Signed before development starts. This is the document that settles disagreements later, and it is why we spend real effort on it.
  • Live staging demos every sprint. A working URL every one to two weeks, not a deck. You open it on your own phone, on your own commute, on your actual network — which is a far better test of the thing than any conference room review. Your CFO can look at it at 11pm without anyone scheduling a meeting.
  • A shared tracker. Every open item, owner and status, continuously visible. Given how hard it is to align calendars in Mumbai, removing the need for status meetings is not a small benefit.
  • Handover. Repository access, credentials in your name, and a recorded walkthrough of the things you will want to change yourself.

When a Mumbai agency is genuinely the better choice

We would rather say this upfront than have you discover it in week six:

  • Film, photography and studio production. If the project needs a shoot — a hospitality brand, a fashion label, a real estate walkthrough, a founder film — you need a crew on the ground, and Mumbai has the best in the country. Many clients handle this sensibly by commissioning production locally and development separately, which frequently costs less than a bundled package.
  • Brand strategy and identity work. Positioning workshops, naming, identity systems. That work benefits from a room, a whiteboard and a full day of shared attention. It is a different discipline from building software and it is reasonable to hire different firms for each.
  • Regulated engagements that require an on-site vendor. Some BFSI and pharma procurement policies require vendors to be physically auditable, or require on-premise work with systems that have no external access. If your compliance function says so, the compliance function wins.
  • Campaign work with same-day turnaround. If your marketing team needs a creative sitting with them during a live campaign, that is a resourcing model, not a project, and it should be staffed locally.

Outside those, the physical location of the person writing your backend has no bearing on its quality. Guwahati and Mumbai share a time zone, so there is no working-hours gap. Meetings run on Meet or Zoom, payments are standard GST-invoiced bank transfers, and interstate service supply is entirely routine.

A realistic cost and timeline picture for Mumbai businesses

These are planning ranges, not a price list. Anyone quoting a firm number before understanding your requirements is either guessing or anchoring low deliberately. Note that these are our ranges — comparable Mumbai agency quotes typically run meaningfully higher for equivalent scope, largely reflecting local cost structures rather than a difference in the delivered software.

Corporate and credibility sites

Six to fifteen pages, custom design, CMS-managed, contact and enquiry routing, sound SEO structure, mobile-first. Covers most professional services firms, consultancies, mid-size manufacturers and B2B companies whose site exists to establish legitimacy and capture enquiries.

Typical range: roughly ₹60,000 to ₹1,80,000. Timeline: four to seven weeks. The variable is nearly always how fast approved content and images arrive from your side, and in Mumbai that often means how quickly the marketing head can get sign-off from a leadership team that travels.

Content-heavy and media properties

Publishing platforms, editorial sites, entertainment properties, podcast or video-led properties. The engineering challenge is asset delivery and caching under concurrent load, not page count.

Typical range: roughly ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000. Timeline: eight to sixteen weeks. If there is a traffic spike pattern to design around — a show launch, a results announcement, a campaign burst — that shapes infrastructure decisions early and should be raised in the first call, not discovered at load testing.

Financial services and fintech-adjacent builds

Calculators, application flows, KYC-adjacent journeys, advisor or distributor portals, secure document exchange. The cost driver is compliance and data handling rather than design.

Typical range: roughly ₹2,00,000 to ₹7,00,000+, with genuine variance depending on regulatory scope. Timeline: ten weeks to five months. Legal and compliance review cycles routinely add weeks that have nothing to do with engineering, and any plan that does not budget for them is fiction.

Real estate project microsites

A Mumbai staple. Single-project sites with gallery, floor plans, location intelligence, RERA disclosures and lead capture pushing into a CRM. These are usually fast-turnaround and template-adjacent by design, and that is the correct approach — the value is speed and lead quality, not bespoke engineering.

Typical range: roughly ₹75,000 to ₹2,50,000 per project site, with meaningful savings when several run off a shared, well-built base. Timeline: two to five weeks each once the base exists.

E-commerce and custom applications

Payment gateway, inventory, orders, shipping, GST invoicing for storefronts; dealer portals, booking systems, internal dashboards and membership platforms for custom applications.

Typical range: roughly ₹2,00,000 to ₹8,00,000+ for e-commerce; from around ₹3,00,000 upward for custom applications, frequently well beyond. Timeline: ten weeks to six months, usually phased so something usable ships early rather than everything landing at once.

What inflates the number

  • Integrations with legacy internal systems that lack a modern API
  • Original content and copywriting rather than migration of existing material
  • Compliance and legal review cycles, particularly in BFSI and pharma
  • Approval chains — this does not raise the price but reliably extends the schedule, and Mumbai's larger organisations tend to have long ones

Recurring costs to budget separately: hosting from roughly ₹5,000 to ₹40,000 a year depending on traffic and whether you need managed infrastructure, domain renewal, SSL if not bundled, payment gateway transaction fees, and either a maintenance retainer or a named internal owner. Sites without an owner degrade within about eighteen months regardless of how well they were built.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Mumbai?

No. India Web Designs is headquartered in Guwahati, Assam, and has been delivering web projects since 2012. We serve Mumbai clients remotely. We are not going to list a coworking address in Andheri and call it a Mumbai office, which is a common enough practice that it is worth checking on any vendor you shortlist — ask whether the address on their site is a staffed office or a mailbox. If a physical Mumbai presence is a hard requirement for your procurement or compliance function, we are not the right fit, and we will say that on the first call.

How is quality assured without local support?

Three mechanisms replace proximity. A written fixed scope so there is no dispute about what was promised. Live staging demos every sprint so you are evaluating working software continuously rather than accepting a finished product at the end. And complete ownership of code, hosting and domain in your name, so you are never locked in.

That third point is the real answer. The fear behind "no local support" is being stranded with something you cannot fix. If you hold the repository and every account, the worst realistic outcome is that you hire a different developer and hand them the code — inconvenient, not catastrophic. It is the vendors holding your assets who can turn a bad relationship into a genuine crisis, and plenty of those have offices five minutes from yours.

What if my business is very Mumbai-industry-specific?

Industry specificity is mostly a commercial and regulatory question, and you already hold that knowledge. If you are an NBFC, the useful questions are what your compliance function will and will not permit, how an application journey should be structured, and what happens to abandoned applications. If you are a logistics operator near the port, it is how a freight enquiry should be captured and routed and what your operations team actually needs to see. If you are a production house, it is how a showreel loads on a phone without a nine-second wait.

We extract that in discovery and translate it into architecture. An agency being physically in Mumbai does not give it knowledge of your regulatory position or your operations — it gives it a shorter distance to your office. What matters is whether the team asks the right questions and can build what the answers imply.

Can you work alongside our existing creative agency?

Yes, and for Mumbai clients this is a common and often sensible arrangement. Your brand agency owns identity, creative direction and campaign work; we build and own the technical platform. What makes it work is agreeing boundaries at the start: who signs off on design, who controls deployment, how change requests flow, and who is accountable for performance and uptime. Where these arrangements fail, it is almost always because nobody defined those lines and two vendors ended up quietly deploying over each other.

Can you take over a site another agency built?

Usually, after a paid technical audit. We look at how the site is built, whether the code is clean enough to extend, whether you actually hold the rights and credentials, and what condition the hosting is in. Sometimes the answer is that it is sound and we extend it, which saves you a lot of money. Sometimes it is built on a proprietary platform or is structured badly enough that repair costs more than rebuilding, and we will show you the evidence for that conclusion rather than asserting it. We do not quote takeovers blind, because a blind takeover quote is a guess that gets corrected upward later.

How do contracts and payments work across states?

Signed scope and agreement, GST invoicing, milestone-based payments — typically an advance, one or two milestones tied to demonstrable deliverables, and the balance on handover. Interstate supply of services is entirely routine under GST and your finance team will find nothing unusual in the paperwork. Code, credentials and deliverables transfer on final payment as stated in the agreement.

Where to go from here

If you are shortlisting web design and development companies in Mumbai, two checks cost you nothing and will thin the list quickly. Run each candidate's own website through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. And ask every one of them, in writing, two questions: who writes the code, and who owns it when the project ends. The responses — including how long they take to arrive — tell you more than any pitch deck.

If you want to talk to us after that, the first conversation is a scoping call rather than a sales pitch. We will ask what the site has to accomplish, give you a realistic cost and timeline, and if the honest answer is that your project needs a Mumbai creative shop or a specialist in your regulated niche, we will tell you that.
